Does Labubu Smell? Honest New-Figure Vinyl Odor Review

New vinyl figures have a reputation for chemical smell. Some buyers are concerned about this before buying. Here's the honest, specific answer for Labubu studio editions.

What New Vinyl Actually Smells Like

New PVC vinyl figures have a characteristic plastic smell — sometimes described as chemical, rubbery, or 'new toy' scent. It's from residual plasticizers and manufacturing process compounds that off-gas from the vinyl surface. It's present in virtually all new vinyl collectibles and is not a sign of defective product.

Labubu studio editions have a mild version of this. Out of box, there's a faint plastic smell that's detectable close-range — hold the figure near your nose and you'll notice it. At normal display distance (desk or shelf), it's not noticeable for most people.

Compared to lower-quality vinyl: the smell is less intense in studio-grade vinyl. Mass-market plastic toys can have stronger, more persistent chemical odor. Studio editions are toward the milder end of the vinyl figure spectrum.

How Long Does It Last?

Off-gassing is temporary. For most buyers in normal indoor conditions, the faint new-vinyl smell dissipates within 1–2 weeks of display. After that, the figure is essentially odorless at display distance.

Accelerating the process: place the figure in a well-ventilated room for the first week. Don't seal it in a display case or enclosed shelf immediately after unboxing — airflow speeds off-gassing. A few days of open-air display handles most of it.

Temperature affects it slightly — warmer rooms off-gas faster than cool ones. But this is a passive process that requires no active intervention. Leave it out, wait a week, smell goes away.

Practical Guidance

For most buyers: this is a non-issue. The smell is mild, temporary, and not detectable at normal display distance. The 'does it smell' concern is often larger in anticipation than in reality.

For scent-sensitive buyers or households with smell sensitivities: unbox in a ventilated area, air out for 2–3 days before bringing into a bedroom or enclosed space. This handles any potential concern without affecting the figure.

For display in an enclosed case: wait 1–2 weeks before sealing the figure in an enclosed display case. This allows off-gassing to complete in open air before you contain it. Standard practice for vinyl collectors in case displays.
