How Long Does the Labubu Vinyl Smell Last? New Figure Off-Gassing Explained

The new vinyl smell from a Labubu figure typically fades within 1–4 weeks in an airy environment. This is normal PVC off-gassing — the same smell you notice with new vinyl products. It's not a sign of defect, and the smell reduces quickly when the figure is displayed in a ventilated space.

What Causes the Vinyl Smell

Fresh Labubu figures — and PVC collectibles generally — have a distinctive chemical smell when first unboxed. This is caused by volatile organic compounds (VOCs) released as the PVC stabilizers, plasticizers, and residual solvents from the manufacturing process off-gas at room temperature.

This is the same mechanism behind the smell of a new car interior, new shower curtains, or new vinyl flooring. It's inherent to PVC as a material and isn't a sign that your figure is defective or particularly dangerous. All authentic Labubu figures have this smell when new.

How Long Does It Take to Go Away?

In a well-ventilated room at normal temperature, the strong initial smell dissipates within 1–2 weeks. A faint vinyl smell may linger for 3–4 weeks before becoming undetectable. Figures kept in enclosed spaces (boxes, display cases without airflow) hold the smell longer because the off-gassed compounds accumulate rather than dispersing.

The faux fur ears, if present, absorb and hold the smell slightly longer than the vinyl body. Airing the figure in a well-ventilated room is the most effective method to reduce the smell timeline.

Is the Smell Safe?

Pop Mart's figures comply with ASTM F963 and EN71 standards, which set limits on VOC emissions and hazardous material content. The smell is not at harmful levels for normal handling and display. People who are sensitive to chemical odors may find it irritating during the first week of heavy off-gassing.

If you're sensitive: air the figure outdoors (in shade, away from direct sun) for a day or two before displaying indoors. Don't display in a bedroom until the smell has substantially reduced. Don't heat the figure to 'speed up' off-gassing — higher temperatures accelerate VOC release but can also warp the figure.

How to Reduce the Smell Faster

Display in a ventilated room: the smell dissipates fastest when the compounds can disperse freely. Good airflow from an open window accelerates the process significantly.

Baking soda nearby: placing an open container of baking soda near the figure (not touching it) helps absorb odor compounds. Change daily for the first week.

Avoid enclosed cases immediately after unboxing: let the figure air out for 1–2 weeks before placing in a sealed display case if smell sensitivity is a concern. Once the initial off-gassing phase is done, closed cases don't trap additional smell.
