How to Choose an Airbnb Cover Photo: A Practical Host Guide

Written and maintained by the voxelyo team · Published · 6 min read

Your cover photo should quickly show what is distinctive about the real property. Choose a clear, accurate frame that still reads as a small horizontal preview. A vague room or crop that hides its key feature is a weaker lead than a simpler, informative image.

Airbnb's current Help Center says the first photo appears large in search results and recommends reordering the first five photos on the cover page. That is guidance about ordering and presentation; it does not establish that Airbnb automatically rotates different cover photos for different guests. Use the steps and score below to choose from your own current photo set.

1. Choose the question your lead image answers

Before editing, name the strongest real feature: a private deck, separate beds, or a dining table. Choose a frame that shows it without implying more than guests can use. Show a sofa bed as a bed only if it is offered that way.

If no amenity defines the stay, a wide room view can orient guests better than a close-up. Do not select only for brightness or color, and never imply extra space or privacy.

2. Score the real candidates

Score each candidate 0, 1, or 2 on these five checks. This is an editorial aid, not Airbnb's ranking formula or a booking forecast. Compare a few options, but never let a high total excuse a misleading image.

CheckAskScore guide
Thumbnail clarityRoom or feature clear at a glance?2 clear · 1 delayed · 0 unclear
Accurate promiseShows a real, available feature?2 accurate · 1 needs context · 0 misleading
Useful detailLayout or key feature understandable?2 clear · 1 obscured · 0 hard to judge
Crop toleranceSurvives a shorter horizontal preview?2 safe · 1 near edge · 0 detail cut
Light and colorReadable and true to the room?2 natural · 1 one issue · 0 detail lost

A higher total means the image passes more checks, not that it will produce a particular result. If candidates tie, choose the more accurate, quickly understood frame.

3. Test a wide crop before you commit

Airbnb recommends landscape photos for search results, but does not specify one universal display crop ratio. This sketch is not an app screenshot or a crop rule; it shows why the main feature should stay away from the edges.

CSS illustration only—not Airbnb's interface, exact crop ratio, or a platform requirement. Check the preview Airbnb currently shows on the devices your guests use.

Check the image as a small card and full size. If the room only makes sense when enlarged, choose a wider frame. Keep the entry, bed setup, and relevant access details visible in the uncropped original too.

4. Make the first five work together

Treat the first five as an introduction, not repeated angles: lead feature, a layout view, bedroom, kitchen or dining area, then outdoor space or arrival if useful. No single room must always come first.

Replace near-duplicates with a frame that answers another guest question. Keep the set coherent, but do not force every room to the same brightness or erase real warm and cool lighting.

5. Set the cover in Airbnb, then verify it

Airbnb's current instructions describe a Photo Tour in the listing editor. Photos may be assigned to rooms automatically; hosts can customize the tour.

  1. In the listing editor, open Photos or Photo Tour. Create a tour if needed and review room groupings.
  2. Open All Photos and drag the first five into your preferred order; Airbnb says this saves automatically.
  3. To set the cover, select a photo, choose Set as cover photo, and save. It may take up to 30 minutes to appear.
  4. Review the published listing on a phone and a larger screen.

Airbnb lists separate instructions for computer, iOS, Android, and mobile browser. Labels may change by device or update; use the controls in your editor and check the Help Center when they differ.

6. Check quality and expectations

Airbnb recommends landscape photos, at least 1024 × 683 pixels, a tidy space, daylight, open curtains, lights on, and clear views of unique amenities. These tips do not guarantee search placement or acceptance; check the file and preview separately.

For a dark but usable cover, compare the licensed Auto example: shadows become more visible while warm color and grain remain. This is not blur repair or a guaranteed improvement. Processing requires a paid subscription; review current plans and billing terms before deciding. Editing cannot make a misleading photo a good cover.

Keep the original. Export edits separately, inspect them full size, and compare them with the property. If a guest could infer a different room size, view, bed setup, or amenity, choose another image or retake it.

Common questions

What makes a good Airbnb cover photo?

Choose a clear landscape photo of a real property feature. This checklist is editorial guidance, not an Airbnb ranking formula or booking forecast.

How many photos should I consider for the cover?

Airbnb says hosts can reorder the first five photos and the first appears large in search. Use the next four to preview the property accurately.

Does Airbnb require a particular cover-photo aspect ratio?

Airbnb recommends landscape photos and lists 1024 × 683 pixels as a minimum. Its guidance does not specify one universal display crop ratio; check each device preview.

Can editing rescue a dark or blurry cover photo?

A restrained exposure change may help a dark image, but can reveal grain. Sharpening cannot reliably restore missed focus or motion blur. Compare the output with the original; retake when details are missing.
