TL;DR:It's rarely one big problem. It's usually a dark cover photo, a missing shot of something the guest cares about, and some noise or color cast โ three small fixable things, not a reason to reshoot everything.
A guest scrolling a search results page spends a few seconds per listing before moving on. Nothing about that decision is a single dealbreaker most of the time โ it's a handful of small frictions that add up. Here are the five that show up most often, and the specific fix for each.

This is the one photo that gets seen before a guest decides to open the listing at all. If it's the weakest photo in the set โ which happens more often than hosts expect, since the cover photo is often just whichever one was uploaded first โ the rest of the gallery never gets a chance. Pick the cover photo deliberately instead of defaulting to upload order.
Dark corners and moody bedrooms are the most common single photo problem. This is fixable at the shooting stage โ see how to photograph a dark bedroom without a flash โ and what's left over afterward (noise, a slight color cast) is what editing handles.
Parking, laundry, storage, the actual view โ see the ten spaces hosts forget to photograph. A gallery missing these doesn't look bad, it just leaves a guest without an answer they'll otherwise message to ask for โ or skip the listing rather than ask.
A photo sized for one platform can genuinely fail another's minimum resolution or aspect ratio โ Booking.com's floor is notably higher than Airbnb's, for example. Check each photo against the specific platform you're uploading to rather than assuming compliance carries over.
This is the purely technical layer, and it's the one editing is actually built for โ see which processing mode to use for which photo. It's worth fixing last, after the shot itself covers what it needs to and is sized correctly โ editing can't add information a photo never captured.
The cover photo. A guest decides whether to open a listing at all based on the thumbnail, before any of the other photos in the gallery get seen. If the first image is dark, blurry, or badly cropped, the rest of the gallery doesn't matter yet.
It can fix noise, softness, and color casts โ the technical problems. It can't fix a photo that's missing information a guest needs (see the overlooked-spaces list), or one that's genuinely out of focus from camera shake. Shooting and editing solve different halves of the problem.
Usually not โ identify which specific photos are the problem (often the cover photo and one or two dark rooms) and fix those specifically, rather than treating the whole gallery as broken.
