Why Authentication Matters More Now
Labubu counterfeit quality has improved significantly. Where early fakes were obvious (wrong colors, terrible paint), 2025–2026 production fakes pass casual inspection. Only systematic checking catches them.
The risk is amplified by the price. A $150 'rare edition' that turns out to be fake has zero resale value — you can't even offload it as a counterfeit without legal risk.
Step 1: Verify the Source First
Before examining the figure, evaluate the source. Authorized Pop Mart channels (us.popmart.com, Pop Mart physical stores, Pop Mart official Amazon/eBay storefronts) carry zero counterfeit risk.
For secondary market purchases: check seller history (3+ years, 50+ relevant transactions), look for photos of the figure's base with Pop Mart logo, and require an unboxing video of your specific figure.
Step 2: Box and Packaging Inspection
Authentic blind boxes: precise color saturation, no text bleed, sealed pull-tab with even perforations, box corners meet flush with no gaps. The Pop Mart logo on the base of the box should be sharp, not fuzzy.
For opened figures being resold: request photos of the original box. If the seller 'lost' the box, that's not disqualifying but raises the bar for everything else.
Step 3: NFC and QR Code Verification
Every authentic Pop Mart figure includes an NFC chip in the base and a QR code on the box. The QR code should resolve to a Pop Mart product page. The NFC chip should trigger a Pop Mart authentication response on a compatible phone.
Counterfeits either omit these, print non-functional codes, or use codes that redirect to unrelated sites. Failed NFC/QR = automatic disqualification, no further inspection needed.
Step 4: Material and Weight Check
Hold the figure in your palm. Authentic vinyl figures feel dense and smooth. The surface should have a slight semi-gloss finish, not matte or high-gloss. Fakes often feel lighter (hollow) or have a slightly tacky, rubbery surface.
Squeeze gently — authentic vinyl has consistent firmness with minimal give. PVC fakes often feel either too hard/brittle or too flexible.
Step 5: Paint Detail Inspection
Use a macro photo or magnifying glass for final inspection. Check: eye pupils (should be centered, crisp edges, no paint bleed into sclera), ear interior gradient (smooth fade, not flat color), teeth paint (clean edges, consistent brightness).
Any paint bleed, asymmetry in pupils, or wrong color tone on the ears fails this step. Authentic Pop Mart QC is very consistent — if something looks slightly off, it probably is.
How to Buy Without Needing to Authenticate
The cleanest solution is buying from sources where authenticity isn't a question. Pop Mart retail drops at the right price, or 3D printed alternatives from studios like Labubu Studio if you want specific designs at a fixed price without the lottery.
If the authentication process seems like too much work, that's the market telling you the secondary market has friction. Your alternatives: wait for retail drops, buy from Pop Mart official channels only, or choose a different product entirely.
